Despite a worrying quote earlier this week from Japanese publication Nikkei, Sony says that there is no mass exodus from the Vita to the 3DS among Japanese developers.

Gamasutra translates the quote (from an anonymous source) as saying: "Major Japanese companies are canceling all projects intended for the Vita and are changing development to the 3DS." Not content to let such a premature statement tarnish the reputation of the new handheld, Sony Worldwide VP Scott Rohde clarified things for Gamasutra in an interview.

"I did not see that quote, but you see extremist quotes like that all the time. I mean, obviously, there is no way anyone could stand in front of a camera and say that all developers are changing focus from one platform to another, no matter what it is,"he says. "I know many, many, many third party developers and publishers are feverishly working on Vita titles, not just for now, but for the foreseeable future."

While it could be Sony trying to get people to set any doubts aside and go ahead with a Vita purchase, there is a lot of truth in what Mr. Rohde says. Developing for the two systems is a very different exercise, to say nothing of the differences in horsepower between the two latest portables. We'll keep an eye on the story if any new information comes out, so stay tuned in to VitaGamers.com for the latest PS Vita info.

I doubt major japanese developers are cancelling Vita development. Sony has a huge opportunity in North America, and the developers know this.

I totally agree. It would be crazy for people to start switching development to a wildly different handheld before the Vita even officially launched here. Just a strange rumor, I expect.
